Urban Farming Without Land: Building a Backyard Food System
Participants will learn how to turn small urban spaces into productive food gardens using simple backyard systems that I've personally used throughout the years. I will walk through how to grow food without traditional farmland by using raised beds, grow bags, containers, and high intensity planting methods. We will cover how to plan a small garden layout, choose crops that produce well in limited space, and use techniques like interplanting and succession planting to keep food growing throughout the season. Participants will also learn practical tips for soil, spacing, and crop combinations that work well in urban environments. The goal is for attendees to leave with a clear understanding of how they can start growing food in their own backyard, patio, or small outdoor space.

Light: Most Important, Least Understood
Outdoor gardeners generally have a good sense of their sunlight exposure and indoor grow ops have well documented instructions to follow - but houseplant owners are left with vague, hand-wavy directions like "bright indirect light" - which leads to dramatically different interpretations and results. In this talk, Darryl will reveal the secrets to understanding light with a particular focus on how it applies to indoor growing - comparing natural light and grow lights. You will finally be able to make sense of light!

Pest Management with Houseplants
IPM means using a set of common-sense practices to manage pests. These include cultural practices like good sanitation, biological controls like using DMV Beneficials, physical controls like traps, and chemical controls like Neem oil or other products when necessary. IPM is used by professionals in land management and agriculture, but it isn't well known to most people, even though we all deal with pests on our houseplants! So this will be an overview on using IPM on common houseplant pests.
